According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for infants and young children between the ages of 1-4. Keeping your family safe in and around the water motivates everything we do at ISR.
The most critical line of defense is adult supervision. This includes during both swim and non-swim times. A majority of water accidents and drownings happen when children are not supposed to be near the water. If your child is ever missing, look in ALL places with water first.
Have a designated Water Watcher with eyes on kids at all times. Water Watchers can take 20 minutes "shifts" so they don't develop attention deficit. No cell phones or electronic devices. Consider hiring a lifeguard for water related events. When at a public pool or beach, swim near the lifeguard.
Install a permanent 4-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates, a specialized pool fence, pool and jacuzzi safety covers. Ensure that the pool fence is at least 3-5 feet from the pool edge. A 4-sided pool fence can decrease the chances of a water accident by more than 80%, compared to a 3-sided fence.
Make sure all doors and windows, especially the ones leading to the pool area, are locked and alarmed. You can turn your home security system’s chime feature on, install stand-alone alarms, and use child safety locks. Install motion sensitive pool alarm, remove pet doors, and install door knobs up high.
A moment's inattention does not have to cost a child his life. ISR's Self-Rescue training is an added layer of protection, teaching your child water survival skills in a completely safe environment. This is a layer of protection that goes with your child.
If an emergency happens, it is essential parents and families are prepared. Learn to perform CPR on children and adults and remember to update those skills regularly.
Please remember that any time spent in flotation will need to be unlearned in ISR Lessons. Spending time in flotation devices makes learning the ISR method more challenging for the child.
Just SAY NO to floaties!
Life vests are recommended for boating (by law) and swimming in fast moving or deep water. They are not learn-to-swim devices or for use in pools. Flotation devices give children and parents a false sense of security in and around the water.
